What is an International Driver’s License Translation Document?
An International Driver’s License Translation Document is an unofficial translation of your government issued native driver's license
into 8 different languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish).
It is a NON-governmental issued booklet and card in English, which enables you to translate your valid government issued driver
license into multiple languages.
The Global Automobile Association, LLC (GAA) issues a booklet and a card with all your vital information from your government issued driver
license, as a simple and effective translation of your license. It is very useful for a motorist that could face communication and
language difficulties when travelling to another country; and helps with the interpretation of your official government issued driver
license.
Will this document I receive from GAA replace my government issued driver license?
No, absolutely not. The document you receive from the GAA will not substitute your government issued driver license.
It will only act as an unofficial translation of your valid government issued driver license and must be presented to officials with
your government issued driver license. You must carry both your official driver license and the GAA translation document together.
Can I use my GAA issued International Driver’s License Translation Document as a form of identification when travelling?
Your GAA issued international driver license translation document is only designed as a supplement to your valid government issued
driver license only. It's unlikely anyone would accept your International Driver’s License Translation Document as a valid form of
identification. Your government issued driver license or Identification (ID) card may serve as an accepted form of ID;
and your passport is unquestionably your best form of ID when travelling.
Can I drive with my International Driver’s License Translation Document only?
No. You can only drive when carrying both your government issued original driver license and your GAA issued International Driver’s
License Translation Document.
What license do I give to the police if I am stopped in another country while I’m travelling?
You should always carry both your government issued driver license, and your International Driver’s License Translation Document,
and you should present both to the police. If you receive a traffic violation, it will not affect your International Driver’s License
Translation Document, but could very well impact your license and your record in your native country (where your license was issued).
Laws will vary greatly from country to country, and you should get acquainted with the laws of the country you are travelling to,
and of course obey all laws.
